Headed to National, was in Livingston, Montana get'n gas.
As I was pumping, a middle aged man approached, he had something on his mind.
I stopped and listened as he told me his story.
As a little boy, his dad would take him to the airport to meet the returning soldiers from Vietnam.
He said his dad would hold his hand, and they would stand in between the returning soldiers and the protesters, thanking them as they passed.
Said his dad told him he wanted him to remember what he saw there ......Clearly he did.
I told him to thank his dad for me, and he looked up at the blue sky and said "Thanks Dad".
It touched me and I thanked him for sharing his memories. I pulled back onto the Interstate, feeling a little bit better. It felt as if I had gotten my second wind, and I laid down 700 miles that day.
On my return from National, had put another 700 miles on as I pulled into Missoula. Got my motel room and headed across the street to a Mexican restaurant.
I was beat but Mexican sounded pretty good to me.
As I sat at the table alone, a lady came up and simply said "Thank You", I smiled and returned her words, went back to eating.
As another group passed by, a gal reached out and touched my shoulder.
She told me her dad was in Vietnam and Thanked me for my service.
I finished my meal and went back to my motel room. I slept very well that night.
This is why I wear the Patch, and it's why I have no intention of retiring. We will never know how many conversations our Patch has started.
We are still here, and people remember.
