Family vacation to Florida during a Hurricane. Luckily where we were staying all we had was a bit of rain and a lot of wind.
Got home on the 2nd.
Yesterday, we had to evacuate our home due to huge fires that came, yesterday, within 3 miles of town & our home.
We were going to evac west to my Brother's home. Singer was behind me in her car, I was in my car. We drove into heavy smoke (PSA: do NOT do that!!). Singer lost sight of me. I was checking my rear-view for her, looked back at the roadway, truck tractor with tank semitrailer tumped over, on fire & blocking both lanes of travel. I swerved hard right onto the shoulder and almost in another disabled car on the shoulder. I swerved hard left and missed them all. Counted to 10 and Singer did not come through.
Risked driving east in the west-bound lanes back through the crashes. Yup, Singer had impacted the big rig. Jeep is TOTALED. Fortunately, with today's airbags, seat belts and other safety equipment, she suffered only minor injuries, the most severe of which is a broken right pinky finger.
I got her out of the Jeep and into my car, hauled ass back to Ray thinking I'd take her to Tioga ER. Called 9-1-1, they had me wait at the gas station in Ray for an ambulance. Then we had to wait there for the road East to get cleared enough to get through.
Eighteen miles from Ray to Tioga, there were several farm buildings on both sides of the highway fully involved in flames, two cars burnt out, a H-D dresser on its side. The rider was evacuated 90 miles east to Minot with multiple, non-life threatening injuries, and several oil pads afire.
After Singer was released from hospital, my Brother Kenny, some of you met him at Sturgis a few years back, had gotten us a hotel room. So that where we are now.
After first light, I'll get in the car and head west see if a) our house is still standing. I figure odds are about 70% is it. B. Go back to the crash site see if I can't find one of the cats that were in her Jeep. We had 6 carriers, arrived at the wrecking yard with 5 carries. So I'm hoping somehow our missing kitty is in the missing carrier at the site. Three of the carriers were destroyed on impact. So Mouse could've gotten out when an investigating Deputy opened the car door.
Bottom line is, for now, we're okay. Stepped out into the hallway, still heavy odor of smoke.
